Typesetting is the composition of text by means of arranging physical types or the digital equivalents. Stored letters and other symbols are retrieved and ordered according to a language's orthography for visual display. Typesetting requires one or more fonts. A Typesetter is a graphic design professional who lays out text in preparation for printing or publishing. They format, style, and arrange text and illustrations for publications. Their goal is to make the work clear and legible, without any distracting elements like having the same word repeated along a column.

The Typesetter’s primary duty will be to format, style and arrange the text for the directory ‘Menu Ad’ pages that was type-produced, then submitted by the Typing Clerk. Menu Ad pages include the menu items, item descriptions, and pricing information. Formatting Menu Ad pages also includes arranging food illustrations when laying out the text in preparation for print publishing of the directory.

The Typesetter responsibilities also may include keyboarding, transcribing, or importing blocks of text into page layout software, after which they format and style the copy into a legible and aesthetically pleasing product. The Typesetter may also be required to mock-up several different style examples and present them to the clients. In completing an assignment, the Typesetter must take into consideration all project budgets and the capabilities of the press being used for final printing.
